General anaesthesia

Safe, stress-free dental care under general anaesthesia

General anaesthesia can sometimes be necessary to ensure your child’s dental treatment is safe and free of discomfort.

At Norwest, we prioritise your child’s wellbeing, working only with the most highly trained anaesthetists and nurses to create a calm, controlled environment.

Why might my child need general anaesthesia?

Children who require day-stay general anaesthesia for their dental treatment need the expertise of a specialist paediatric dentist who has access to hospital facilities.

This approach may be necessary for several reasons:

Dental anxiety

Some children’s anxiety about dental procedures makes in-chair treatment challenging, so general anaesthesia ensures their care is completed with minimal stress.

Complex dental issues

Children with complex dental problems requiring invasive treatment, such as extensive decay or multiple extractions, are better managed under general anaesthesia.

Difficulty cooperating

Young children or those with additional needs may need an anaesthesia to ensure their safety and allow specialists to provide high-quality care under ideal conditions.

Long procedures

When dental work involves multiple teeth or will take an extended amount of time, general anaesthesia can be used to complete all necessary treatment in one visit, minimising the number of appointments needed.

Medical conditions

For children with complex medical conditions that impact their dental treatment, general anaesthesia to ensure their safety and to manage the procedure more effectively.

Additional needs

Children with physical or intellectual disabilities, or behavioural challenges may be unable to have treatment completed in the dental clinic setting due to their unique needs.

Sedation in our clinic: Happy gas

While general anaesthesia is used for more complex hospital procedures, we also offer happy gas (laughing gas) to help children feel at ease during treatment carried out in the chair.

This safe and effective sedative won’t put your child to sleep, but it will help them relax—allowing us to complete their treatment comfortably.
